ERIE COLORADO DETAILS
Brief Historical Notes
The Town of Erie was named in the year of 1867 and officially incorporated in November of 1874. It was a mining town where the miners were locals. Coal rose to popularity in the area during the 1860s. The Denver-Pacific Spur Railroad came into service in 1870. Because of the railroad service being able to transport coal out quickly and effectively to neighboring areas, Erie grew immensely in popularity.
This town was “wet”. In fact, it was one of the only of such towns at the time. Eventually, eleven saloons were established on Briggs Street. This resulted in continued growth and construction, bringing the jail into existence. Several floods have impacted the area throughout history. After the conclusion of World War II, the coal demand dropped significantly. By 1978, all mines were closed. Since that time, the town has gained the reputation of being one of the safest areas to live within the State of Colorado. Today, homes continue to be constructed and the demand for real estate is at an all-time high.
